Lufkin, Texas – A Texas zoo is mourning the loss of the oldest giraffe in human care. On July 8, the city of Lufkin announced Twiga’s death, noting that she was 31 years, 9 months, and 7 days old at the time of her passing.
Twiga lived at the Ellen Trout Zoo, and she held the record for being the oldest giraffe in captivity, with most giraffes living to be just 25 years of age.
Twiga was born at the Los Angeles Zoo in October 1991, and came to the Ellen Trout Zoo in June of 2008.
Zoo Director Gordon Henley said:
“Twiga helped our other two giraffes, Kellen and Luna, feel comfortable in their new home in Lufkin.”
Adding:
She will be greatly missed.”
