Sandy Hook, NJ – Last week, a tragic discovery was made in Sandy Hook Bay. According to the  Marine Mammal Stranding Center, officials were called out last Wednesday after receiving reports that two dolphins were stranded near the Naval Weapons Station Earle.

The dolphins were stranded on a sandbar approximately 150 feet from the pier; one dolphin was deceased and the other was clinging to life. A rescue team was able to reach the young dolphin and rush it to a veterinarian for care. In a release, the agency said:

After a veterinary exam it was determined that the young dolphin was in an extremely weakened condition and could not survive. The decision was made to humanely euthanize the animal to prevent any further suffering. Due to the animal’s small size, the Animal Health Diagnostic Lab (NJAHDL), New Jersey Dept. of Agriculture in Trenton had room to accept this dolphin for necropsy.

By Wednesday evening, the mature dolphin washed ashore. According to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, the dolphin will be buried at the scene.
