Cypress, CA – The announcement that three more racehorses have died prompted protests outside Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress. Officials with the California Horse Racing Board announced two racehorse deaths at Santa Anita, and one at Los Alamitos.

The tragic announcement prompted animal rights activists to stage a protest on Tuesday. One protester told ABC 7 News that the key to ending the deadly sport is to outlaw gambling. Heather Wilson said gambling is the “lifeblood of this disgusting, outdated bloodsport.”

There are an alarming number of racehorses dying on tracks across the nation. According to an eye-opening article in Salon, the reason is human greed. Horses are forced to run too young, bred to have lightweight bones, and doped up to push them beyond their limits.

The results are devastating. Horses suffer catastrophic injuries on the track and they are killed rather than rehabbed.

The recent deaths include a six-year-old mare named Twentyseventrouts, a four-year-old filly named Classic Coyne, and a two-year-old filly named Animae.

Race track officials have stated that the tracks have been inspected and they are safe, but the problem seems to be the people breeding and training the horses…racehorses who give their all to a sport that is focused solely on the money.
