Birmingham, AL – A reward is being offered for information leading to the identification and arrest of whoever left two dogs and a puppy inside a parked car to die. On Wednesday, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) said the Birmingham Police reached out for assistance after-hours to rescue several dogs locked in a hot car. The car was left at a Birmingham gas station near Bush Boulevard.

A window of the car was broken out; one dog had already died from heat stroke and the other two dogs were suffering from severe heat distress. Officers attempted to cool the surviving dogs with ice and water from the gas station.

The dogs were rushed to an emergency veterinarian but the heat had taken a deadly toll and they died.

Allison Black Cornelius, Chief Executive Officer of GBHS, commented on the horrible situation:

“GBHS is so grateful for Birmingham police officers’ quick response and life-saving measures. These two dogs were crying and whimpering in pain all the way to the hospital. Our officers see the worst of what people do to innocent animals. Leaving dogs in a car in record heat is a horrible death sentence for the animal. The suffering is unimaginable.

We are asking the public for any information they may have about this incident, and I ask the community to pray for the first responders who have to see this every day.”

The humane society is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible. Anyone with any information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

These dogs suffered and died needlessly. There is absolutely NO reason to leave dogs inside of a parked car on even moderately warm days. Dying from heat stroke is excruciating. Please leave your pets at home, not in your car.
