Residents Mourn Loss of ‘Walter,’ Alligator Killed by DNR Officials

Daniel Island, SC – Residents of a Daniel Island community are mourning the death of an alligator known as Walter, who had lived in the area for 12 years. On Friday, Department of Natural Resources officials killed the alligator, who had lived peacefully among the Daniel Island Village neighborhood residents for more than a decade.

As reported by ABC News 4, Walter was baited and killed by the DNR contractors, who reportedly acted in compliance with the law.

Though the killing was done legally, residents are upset that Walter is gone. At a vigil, organizers said:

“The Daniel Island Village community believes that Walter’s death represents a significant failure to prioritize coexistence with wildlife, particularly as urban development continues to encroach on their natural habitats. The area has already seen substantial destruction of local wildlife environments, and Walter’s peaceful presence was a reminder of the importance of protecting the animals that remain.”

Rest easy Walter.
