Outrage After Deputy Fatally Shoots Loose Pig, Jewel

Door County, WI – There is growing outrage over the killing of a pig dubbed Jewel on Highway 42 in Door County. According to sources, the pig had been wandering loose for several days and efforts were underway to capture her.

The Saving Snouts Sanctuary helped organize a search group to find the pig, and the Door County Sheriff’s Office let the public know that they were aware of the situation and hoping to find the pig’s owner:

Yes, we have a loose pig roaming in the area of STH 42/57 near County MM, near PJ’s Gas Station in the southern part of Door County. Despite several attempts over the last two days by many people, we have been unsuccessful in capturing the pig.
The Door County Sheriff’s Office is asking for your help! If you know who the owner of this pig might be, please get in touch with us. We are still actively searching for the owner.

But when Jewel was found, she was not captured, she was fatally shot by a Door County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The authorities released a statement after Jewel was killed:

As many of you may be aware, the Door County Sheriff’s Office had asked for our community’s help in capturing a loose pig and identifying its owner. We were concerned because the approximately 300-lb. pig had been walking into traffic on two of our major highways and previous attempts to capture it were unsuccessful.
On September 20, 2024, at about 6:45 p.m. Door County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a 911 call from a motorist reporting the pig was again in the roadway on highway 42 in the southern part of the county. Upon their arrival they encountered the pig in the roadway and started to enter the ditch. Because of its proximity to the highway, and the potential danger the large, loose pig posed to motorists and others on the roadway, a Door County Sheriff’s Deputy dispatched the pig.

But many people are outraged because a rescue volunteer was present when Jewel was found, and she let the deputy know that a trailer was on the way to pick the pig up. Tragically, there was no waiting for help to arrive – the deputy who was supposed to tranquilize Jewel shot and killed her instead.

Saving Snouts writes:

I don’t even know how to share this but we had a dear friend there who found her, we have named her Jewel Door County Sheriff’s Office arrived and was supposed to tranquillize her. Unfortunately they chose to shoot her and kill her… no amount of words can console me right now. We failed you sweet girl but hell if I will let anyone eat you. She is on her way to Saving Snouts where she will be rest forever I will be off social media.

Rest in peace Jewel.
