Prunedale, CA – A man has been jailed after an hours long shooting spree that left 81 animals dead. According to sources, 39-year-old Vicente Joseph Arroyo massacred the animals, including a pony, miniature horses, birds, rabbits, goats, and guinea pigs, over a period of three hours that began in the early morning hours last Tuesday.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said that Arroyo was apprehended after a shelter-in-place order was issued for residents in the area of the 16000 block of Avery Lane in Prunedale. With the help of a drone, Arroyo was located and arrested.
The authorities obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s camper and found thousands of rounds of ammunition, and more than a dozen firearms.
Monterey County Sheriff Commander Andres Rosas told The Associated Press Friday, “I went out there, and it was a pretty traumatic scene. These were people’s pets.” Some of the animals survived the shooting, but had to be humanely euthanized because of their severe injuries.
Arroyo was booked into the Monterey County Jail for Willful Discharge of a Firearm with Gross Negligence, Cruelty to Animals, Illegal Possession of Assault Weapon, Vandalism, Criminal Threats and Felon In Possession of a Firearm. Bail has been set at $1 million.
The motive for the deadly rampage is a mystery.
