Jacksonville, FL – A couple who owns a home in the Lackawanna community got a shocking surprise when they went to check on their rental property after the tenants vacated…130 neglected chihuahuas had been left behind.
The homeowners, who have chosen not to be identified, told News4Jax, “When we arrived, the renters were long gone, but the house was filled with dogs running around. I believe the dogs may have gone a couple of days without food, and we decided to feed them, and then they called the authorities.”
The dogs were taken to the Animal Care & Protective Services facility, which issued a prompt request for help:
Yesterday, the animal services agency thanked the community for the positive response to the massive intake of dogs:
Happy Monday, Jacksonville! After reflecting back on this weekend, we feel so many emotions. Large intakes are tough for many reasons, but situations like these remind us why we do the work that we do… and that we couldn’t do it without support. So thank you for:
spreading the word about our large intake and the pups who needed help
standing in line for HOURS just to learn about fostering and adopting
being patient with our staff—who worked nearly around the clock to get these pups ready to go out to foster and adoption on top of taking care of the rest of our population
and last but not least, partying with us at our first ever Trunk or Treat!
And to our volunteers, extra big THANK YOU for running around nonstop to support our staff and assist our community. You were rock stars this weekend!
Jacksonville, the sense of community that we’ve felt the past few days has been amazing. We couldn’t save lives without you. ❤️
