Hearts Break For Camel Calf Euthanized After Breaking Leg

Camel calf euthanized after breaking leg

Idaho Falls, ID – Hearts are breaking over the death of a camel calf who had to be euthanized after suffering a broken leg. According to the Idaho Falls Zoo, on July 19 Humphrey the camel underwent surgery to repair a leg that was broken when his mother accidentally stepped on him.

Following the surgery, Humphrey stayed inside the zebra barn, but hopes for a successful recovery were dashed when veterinarians discovered an infection in his leg. The zoo explains what led to the decision to humanely euthanize the calf:

Unfortunately, his professional animal care and veterinary team discovered an infection in his leg bone while changing his cast and taking radiographs today. After consulting with multiple other veterinarians to determine any possible next steps, the extremely difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize Humphrey.

Given Humphrey’s size, the staff knew that recovery was going to be difficult, if not impossible, but they had hope for success. Those who knew and cared for the calf are devastated over his death.

The zoo writes:

The hardest hit are the zoo staff, particularly his caregivers. Please keep them in your thoughts during this emotionally challenging time.

Rest in peace Humphrey.
