Ontario, Canada – An Ontario family is mourning the loss of their two German shepherds, who were shot and killed on their property by a coyote hunter. As reported by CBC News, Hank and Mary Jane were shot dead not far from their home on Saturday, not long after they were let out on the 5-acre property to play.
The German shepherds belong to Kaitlin Strong and her husband, who are devastated by the loss of their pets. Strong tells the news agency:
“I personally feel unsafe in my home because as far as I’m concerned, this is not just a hunting accident — it’s a public safety issue. They’re firing near houses on land they shouldn’t be on and it’s not just a safety issue for pets and pet owners. It’s also a safety issue for the entire community.”
Coyote hunts are legal on Saturdays, but not on private property without the owner’s permission. The dogs were not found until Monday – their bodies were returned to the family.
One person has turned himself in to the police; he will face charges. The authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing.
The dogs’ deaths have left a hole in their family’s life. Strong tells the news agency:
“Our home is so quiet now. No more excited greetings at the front door after a long day of work or cuddles on the couch with our babies. Our best friends and treasured family members were ripped from our lives so violently and suddenly that we will never be the same after this event.”
