HOMOSASSA, FL – Two women have been arrested and charged with animal cruelty and neglect after Animal Control Unit officers with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) found cats and dogs living in squalor at a residence on West Akazian Lane – a property where there had been 38 previous “animal related” service calls.
According to the authorities, Melissa Dawn Heward was arrested and charged with 10 counts of animal cruelty, and Samantha Lynn Heward was charged with 4 counts of animal cruelty and 1 count of aggravated animal cruelty.
Officers seized 11 dogs and five cats; all were surrendered to the county and are receiving veterinary care.
Officers determined that two minor children also lived at the residence. The children were taken in by Department of Children and Families (DCF), and the residence was deemed “unsafe.”
