Heartbreak: Entire Litter Of Puppies Euthanized After One Diagnosed With Rabies

Sheridan, CO – An entire litter of puppies had to be euthanized after one puppy tested positive for rabies. According to sources, the puppies were available for adoption at an event for Moms and Mutts Colorado.

One of the pups was adopted to Jessica Eden and Keith Bryk, who tell ABC 8 News about the heartbreaking call they received informing them that their puppy had to be put down, “Well, the next day, I’m at work, I get a voicemail from MAMCO saying, ‘Hey, I’m so sorry. I just got notified that the state has decided that they need to euthanize all the puppies immediately. They’re coming to seize your puppies. And within maybe 15 minutes, he was at home and he hears a knock on the door, so that was quite the whirlwind.”

On Tuesday, the Moms and Mutts Rescue group issued a Facebook post about the tragic incident, writing:

They were good boys and girls, and all they wanted was to love a person and to have a person love them back. They got that, but it wasn’t for long enough. Out of the 12 puppies, only 2 tested positive for rabies, yet they all lost their lives.

Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment explained why the drastic measures were taken:

“We know that these puppies had very close contact for an extended period of time and so we know that there’s a high likelihood that the puppy that did test positive has potentially spread this virus to other puppies in the litter, so that’s the really tragic part of this story,”

Public health officials will continue to screen people who attended the event and offer post-exposure prophylaxis when necessary. People should call 303-692-2700 during business hours, or 303-370-9395 to be screened.
