232 Birds Rescued From Illegal Fighting Operation Given Second Chance

Pierce County, WA – Birds forced to participate in brutal, illegal fights were rescued earlier this month when Pierce County authorities issued a search warrant at property in Buckley. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said:

Animal Control Gives Roosters New Hope
On Thursday August 1st, our animal control officers served a search warrant on a property with a large cockfighting operation. Animal Control seized 232 birds from the property (updated numbers include hens and chicks). They discovered a fighting pit, multiple knives, medication and altered birds on the property.

Typically, birds seized from cockfighting operations are euthanized because of their aggressiveness to people and other animals, but the agency was able to find rescue groups to take them in.

The homeowner was not present during the raid. Sgt. Moss, with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, tells KOMO News the birds at this property are believed to be tied to a larger, Mexican organization:

“Other evidence we found shows he’s possibly shipping these birds out to Mexico where maybe it’s a little bit easier to do these cockfighting events. If we can talk to the owner, great. If not, there’s a possible chance he could have warrants out for him very soon.”

Tell-tale signs of a cockfighting operation include a large number of roosters, A-frame wooden structures where birds are tethered, and/or blue barrels. Please contact your local animal control or police agency if you see signs of cockfighting near your area.
